Filing season challenges for NBFC compliance teams

Filing season shouldn't cost you a fortnight

Most NBFC compliance teams still assemble returns the same way: export from the loan management system, reconcile against the general ledger in Excel, hand the workbook round for sign-off, then re-key it into the RBI's portal. It works until something moves — a taxonomy revision, a late correction from finance, an auditor asking who changed a figure and when.

Four things go wrong, and they go wrong every quarter:

  • Manual consolidation. Data lives in the LMS, the GL and three spreadsheets. Reconciling them by hand is where the hours go, and where the errors get in.
  • Taxonomy changes. The RBI revises schemas and validation rules. A template that filed cleanly last quarter throws errors this quarter, and you find out at upload.
  • Late-filing exposure. Penalties are the visible cost. The supervisory attention that follows a pattern of late or revised filings is the expensive one.
  • No audit trail. When an inspection asks how a number was derived, “it was in the spreadsheet” is not an answer.

What is AB Compliance?

AB Compliance is regulatory reporting software for Indian NBFCs. It takes data from your loan management system and general ledger, validates it against the RBI's current XBRL taxonomy, and produces filing-ready returns with a complete audit trail of every value and every change. It is built and supported in India by Sastra Technologies, which has worked with Indian lenders since 2010.

What is AB Compliance

What it does

Four capabilities. Each one is a heading, a sentence of mechanism, and a line of outcome. The outcome line is the part that sells.

XBRL preparation and validation

Map your source data once. AB Compliance applies the current RBI taxonomy, runs the validation rules before you file, and shows you every exception with the underlying record attached.

You find the errors, not the portal.

RBI audit findings tracking

Log every observation from an RBI inspection or internal audit against an owner and a due date, with evidence attached to the closure.

Walk into the next inspection with the last one fully closed out.

Fair Practice Code workflows

Grievance logging, turnaround-time tracking, and the periodic reporting the Code requires, in one register rather than an inbox.

Board reporting on FPC compliance becomes a report, not a project.

Regulatory change monitoring

Taxonomy and circular updates are applied to your templates centrally, and you are told what changed and which returns it touches.

Nobody on your team has to read the RBI website on a Friday evening.

The practical questions

Frequently asked questions

  • DNBS-01, DNBS-02, DNBS-03, DNBS-04A, DNBS-04B, DNBS-08/09, DNBS-10, DNBS-13 and NBS-9 — prepared, validated and exported in the RBI's required XBRL format from a single mapped data source.

  • A one-time mapping from a scheduled file export or a direct database/API connection, after which each period's data flows in without re-mapping.

  • Taxonomy updates are applied centrally by Sastra. You are notified of what changed and which of your returns are affected; you do not rebuild templates. Updates are applied within a few working days of RBI publication.

  • No. AB Compliance currently produces a file to upload to the RBI portal. Direct filing from the product is not available.

  • Two to three weeks.

  • Yes. The data is hosted on the cloud, running on data centres in India.

  • NBFCs filing returns with the RBI — deposit-taking and non-deposit-taking, including NBFC-MFIs, gold loan companies, MSME lenders and housing finance companies.

  • Your consultant prepares a return once a quarter. AB Compliance keeps the mapping, the validation rules and the audit trail in place all year, so preparation is a review rather than a rebuild — and the trail stays with you rather than in someone else's working papers.
